Videos for SF New Tech’s April Event With MailUp, Foundersuite, Venmo, Songnote, and Directly
SF New Tech is San Francisco’s largest, longest-running, and most loved technology showcase. It didn’t start that way. It took years of hard work from its creator, Myles Weissleder, to get the show to that point. I met Myles more than five years ago after I attended my first SF New Tech event and was really impressed with how he followed up with all the attendees. I ended up writing an article entitled “A great example of conference follow up.†Since then I’ve attended dozens of SF New Tech events and was honored to be invited by Myles and Outlook.com to cover the third leg of their event New Tech Tour in Las Vegas.
I chatted with Myles about the event, what it is, and why it’s on tour. In the video is also Tony Stilling of Microsoft, who explains why Outlook.com is proud to support both SF New Tech and New Tech on Tour.
One of the problems with living in San Francisco is we’re surrounded by so many brilliant and successful people that we start to believe that all the world’s great ideas and technology comes out of the Bay Area. While so many great companies have started here, there are many other great pockets of innovation happening across the country and around the world.
During the third installment of SF New Tech’s road show, New Tech Tour, I asked the attendees at the yet to be opened InNEVation Center, “What’s so awesome about the Las Vegas startup scene?†They gave us 20 great answers. Watch.
The tour is done but the comments still flowing. We had a great tour sponsor in Outlook.com. We sat down with Tony Stilling of Outlook.com and get his thoughts on the New Tech Tour which went through the cities of San Diego, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
Check out Nerd Stalker’s Post Event Show with Nerd Stalker’s Greg Viloria (aka “SocialGreg”) and Liberty Madison (aka “That Tech Girl”) for some comment on their “favs” of the night for April.
We had fun at the April event and we hope you did as well. In case you missed it or want to catch a demo that really caught your eye, here is the video in the raw. Our video ninjas are creating the individual demos videos as we speak. Enjoy!Continue Reading

Great show yesterday and we hope you all enjoyed it! Here are some pics from our Twitter feed.
Meet Antony Brydon, CEO founder and CEO of Directly who will be pitching at our 4/24 event.  True Ventures backed Directly helps you bypass inefficient customer service and go directly to the best experts in a company for help. Let’s see why Antony created this service:
“I worked for several years with customer service and call center startups that build the technology that drives you crazy by making it almost impossible to speak to someone smart and skilled. I even helped Sprint set their average hold times for broadband support at 11 minutes – yikes, I’m sorry!. When smart phones took off, I realized we finally had a platform to get around the bottleneck of the call center and connect customers directly to experts. “
“Experts authenticate company and industry experience via LinkedIn. Once they’re in the community and helping customers, they develop a reputation and helpful score based on how customers and other experts rank them. The best experts earn more tips and testimonials, the less helpful ones sink to the bottom and get limited interaction with customers.”
Meet Juan Benitez, CTO of Venmo Touch who will be presenting at SF New Tech on April 24. Venmo Touch is an easier way to pay on your mobile device. Consumers save their credit card in one mobile app and can checkout across any other app in the network with just one touch. Here’s Juan’s take on Venmo:
“Venmo Touch was created to bring merchants and consumers together. More and more people are shopping on their mobile phones, but it’s a pain to type a credit card number on a tiny touch screen. With Venmo Touch consumers enter their credit card information one time in an app, that information is stored in the Braintree Vault, and can be used to complete any future purchases from merchants on the network. It’s a win-win for everyone because it increases the business’s conversion rates for mobile purchases as well.”
Visit their page below and check out the team page. Cool Gifs going on there.

Meet Massimo Arrigoni, CEO of Mailup who will pitch at our 4/24 Event.  Mailup demonstrates how an ecommerce merchant leverages customer data and gets a higher ROI: using MailUp’s unlimited filters to create highly targeted and automated post-purchase messages. Massimo tells us why they created Mailup:
“MailUp started as a Web agency in Italy back in 2003. Clients kept asking for a good newsletter management system, so we built one “
Massimo tells us how different they are from a service like MailChimp:
“First of all, we’ve got our Italian roots, which show in things like beautiful, fashion inspired email templates (see above) and a very appealing admin interface.”
“Secondly, in MailUp you can create triggered messages (not just notifications) based on multiple conditions, something that cannot be done in a system like MailChimp and that can really make the difference in terms of sales. For example, an ecommerce store could automatically send a message to somebody that has purchased over $500 in the last year, but has not purchased in the last 90 days.â€
Visit them at www.mailup.com | Follow them on Twitter @mailup_us | Like them on Facebook
If you are interested how their Italian roots made their service possible, get your ticket to our 4/24 event here.
Meet Nathan Beckord – Founder of Foundersuite who will be pitching at our 4/24 event. In a nutshell, this service helps founders with “tools to get startup sh*t done.” Don’t we all want to get sh*t done. Nathan talks about the motivation for this service suite for startup founders:
“I’ve been advising and consulting to startups for the past 10 years on BD, Finance, and Ops; after solving the same challenges over and over again, I decided to productize this work into a SaaS startup called Foundersuite.”
“Foundersuite is based on the idea that the best startup founders focus on building product and making customers happy; we want to help with all the “other stuff” like planning, operations, fundraising, investor relations, etc.”
“Our goal is to: 1) Make complex tasks simple and easy; 2) Â Streamline unpleasant tasks (like Turbotax does for filing tax returns); 3) Codify silicon valley best practices; and, 4) Bring process and structure to the messy job of starting a startup.”
The suite is in beta but I think if you reach out to Nathan, he can fix you up.
To find out more visit foundersuite.com | Follow them on Twitter at @foundersuite | Like them on Facebook
If you want to ask Nathan a few questions come to our 4/24 event to hear his pitch!
Meet Heidi Darling – Founder and CEO of Songnote. She will be pitching us at our 4/24 event on their new app – Songnote. Songnote allows you to share a song with a hand crafted note. Heidi reflects on starting Songnote:
“Songnote began with the realization that there was no good way to let someone know when a song reminded you of them.  There were several music discovery services like Pandora and listening platforms like Spotify but there was no mobile tool designed to share the song that moves you.  The emphasis was on discovery and access not conveying sentiment.  Music is universally appealing and an incredible communication tool.  A fast, fun way to share a song+note from your mobile device, Songnoteâ„¢ harnesses the power of music as a way to communicate.  Simply put, it lets your music do the talking.”
Check their app out at http://www.getsongnote.com | Follow them on Twitter @getsongnote | Like them on Facebook

The videos for each presenter - Evernote, Litterati, Townten, Open Garden, Sensus, Shoplocket, WeFile.it, and Herdmark are now live.  Check them out here. Also, the videos are available on our SF New Tech YouTube channel. Give them a view and rate them. Have a great week!
Videos for  Damn, it’s getting hot in here!  With Evernote, Litterati, Townten, Open Garden, Sensus, Shoplocket, WeFile.it, and Herdmark
Meet C.J. MacDonald, one of the founders at Herdmark. He will be pitching us at our 3/20 event on their new collaboration tool – Herdmark. Herdmark allows you to create a library of great resources that you can use, share and add.
“We thought that there was no good way to share bookmarks with your team. Â There are bookmarking tools, like delicious, but they don’t do anything for groups of collaborators. Â And there are team collaboration tools but they don’t have much if any support for bookmarks, and anyway, they do so many things that we believe that they are not used for bookmarks. Â We think that bookmarks hold a sort of “corporate knowledge” in an organization and for subgroups in an organization. Â We wanted to make a focussed tool for bookmarks”
Check them out at http://herdmark.com  | Twitter: @herdmark |
Meet Manuel Acevedo – the CEO at Townten. He will be pitching a local search engine called Townten at our next 3/20 event. If you haven’t heard about Townten, Townten.com is a local search engine that helps you find better quality restaurants, bars and venues in San Francisco and the local Bay Area. It is currently in private beta and will be launched at SF New Tech.
“There are plenty of high-quality places to be discovered in town, but unfortunately, current local search engines use a flawed star-rating algorithm that favors large standardized places instead of higher-quality authentic local businesses. With our new technology we get rid of star-ratings and we help people discover the true topten places in town.”
On pitch day you can find them here | Twitter - @townten |
Introducing Micha Benoliel – Co-founder and CEO of Open Garden. Micha was born into technology where he learned to code in basic on a Zenith PC. Well, back to Open Garden. Open Garden leverages crowdsourcing to create seamless connectivity across 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It enables users to create their own ad-hoc mesh networks with other Open Garden-enabled devices including smartphones, tablets and PCs. What’s a mesh network? Read a little about it here.
“The density of smartphones has attained a critical mass; there are now more devices to connect to the Internet than people. The ecosystem of applications gives developers access to hundreds of millions of users instantly.   Open Garden is leveraging mesh networking and peer-to-peer technologies to turn everyone’s phone into an Internet node in a few clicks. With Open Garden everyone can be connected everywhere as if they were at home.”
Meet Rafe Needleman – the Platform Advocate at Evernote. Rafe will be one of our presenters pitching at our March 20 event. Evernote makes it easy to remember things big and small using your computer, phone, tablet and the web. We all need help with that, right? Well, Evernote has been known for the great apps that it connects to and Rafe will tell you more how you can get involved.
“On Wednesday I’ll be talking about the Evernote platform and the DevCup competition for 2013, which we just kicked off.  I will also discuss a new prize we’re doing with the guys from Honda Silicon Valley Lab.”
Meet Jeff Kirschner – Founder of the Litterati. Jeff will pitching at our March 20 event. For those who don’t know Litterati, they are an organization dedicated to cleaning the planet one piece of litter at a time. Basically, instagram a piece of garbage that you have found, throw it away(they trust you) and become a member – pretty simple. Their organization has already rid the planet of more than 6,000 pieces of garbage.
“I was hiking in the Oakland Hills with my two kids. Â My daughter Tali (4 yrs) noticed that someone had thrown a plastic tub of cat litter into the creek. Â She looked at me and said, “Daddeee, that doesn’t go there.” That was the eye-opening moment. “
Meet Katherine Hague from ShopLocket – our 3/20 presenter. Katherine oversees the day-to-day ops of Toronto-based ShopLocket and makes sure customers keep coming back to their service(aka Biz Dev). ShopLocket lets anyone start selling professionally online in minutes. Simply publish a product, embed it in any website, Facebook page, or blog post, and start seeing the green pile – well, maybe start to mound at the very least.
“ShopLocket was born out of an opportunity that I saw in the market while developing themes for Shopify. I realized that as awesome as storefront solutions are they require you to leave behind whatever platform you had originally been using and start from scratch. Quick alternatives like PayPal buy buttons and marketplaces just seemed unprofessional.”
Catch them at  http://www.shoplocket.com | Twitter: @shoplocket | Facebook
If you want to catch Katherine’s demo in person, go here.
Meet Matt Pacyga – the Chief Strategist at Canopy. He will be pitching Sensus and its API for developers at our next 3/20 event. If you haven’t heard about Sensus, it is a touch sensitive case for your smartphone that expands the functionality to your smartphone experience. Think of it as an accessory that enhances your apps. Gamers – watch out! You will probably see them on iPad – Tall & Grande and Android in the future.
“we heard from the development community… We want MORE! Developers told us that they wanted more inputs from the case into the phone. We created Sensus.”
Check out Sensus at http://developer.getsensus.com/ | Twitter - @canopyco | FacebookÂ
Meet Mathew Guiver, the “life-long entrepreneur” and tax-time friend at WeFile.it. He will be pitching us at our 3/20 event on their new service WeFile.it. WeFile.it makes filing easier and more affordable by cutting out the middlemen, and connecting clients directly with experienced Tax Pros. All Tax Pros are screened by a member of the WeFile.it team before their profiles can go live. They verify the experience and specialties, and also ensure they are responsive and friendly.

2013 will bring…
A Brand New Site!
We’re calling it SFNT 1.5. We’re moving from WordPress to Drupal so we can better kick things up a notch. Big thanks to our friends at AssureSoft for helping to piece it together.
A New Technology!
We’re building a better way for startups to show off their latest & greatest news and new features.

A New Way For Startups To Raise Money!
We’ll be enabling crowdfunding to and for the SFNT community — and beyond.  We’re one step closer to the day you’ll be able to fund the demo you’re watching on stage via your phone. Super-exciting!
A New Way To Find Shared Purpose!
At our 1.23 event we’ll be introducing a way to Match-Connect-Transact with other attendees. Those who sign up will gain access to relevant contacts based on shared purpose. You’re looking for them and they’re looking for you… and we’re going to help you make magic.
A New Monthly Happy Hour To Talk Tech Over Cold Drinks!
Join us for our monthly “Belly Up” happy hours at Harlot (46 Minna). The next one is on 1.29, 6-8 pm. It’s free to join the fun. Cash bar (unless we can find a sponsor). RSVP here: http://bellyup29jan.
Office Hours, For Real!
Through our storied history, SF New Tech’s HQ has literally floated around the bay. The SS SFNT has since been decommissioned but we’re still keen on keeping a light anchor.  That said, we’re proud of our new floating desk at WeWork at 156 2nd Street, one of the best collaborative working environments in SF (and NY an LA). If you’re downtown on Wednesdays or Fridays, drop a line!
A New Approach To New Tech In New Cities!
Most startups worth their salt come to SF to make it happen. But a lot of great things are happening in other cities too. We’re intent on drumming up innovators and people who love innovation to come together in other cities in 2013. If you’re reading this from abroad and want us to come to you, drop a line!
Details Details
Needless to say we’ll be rolling out the nitty-gritty details on all these exciting developments as they emerge. We’re going to need a lot of help from the community to pull all this off famously. Thanks in advance for your support and understanding. 🙂
Your donations via our holiday party helped the Hands Together to Defend the Children (HTDC) Orphanage in Haiti rebuild classrooms that were destroyed by tropical storm Isaac in August. Way to go!
Check out the smiles you helped create!
Over the past few years thanks to the awesome organization, European Disaster Volunteers, we’ve done what we can to help provide a safe house for the kids at HTDC.
In addition to supporting these kids, your donations helped to:
* Provide dinner to 500 families in NY & NJ that were dislocated due to super-storm Sandy (via The River Fund Mobile Pantry);
* Provide 1 child in India with quality education for 1 year (via Non Formal Education Centres);
* Provide enough needles and syringes to vaccinate over 625 Somalian children (via Merlin USA).
Of course, big thanks to the Social Media Club and Outlook.com for helping us pull this off.

When we realized early Tuesday morning after the SF Giants won the pennant and were heading to the World Series here in SF on Wednesday night, on the eve of a long-scheduled SF New Tech event, we had to make a quick and harsh decision: Do we keep the course and compete with the Giants or do we cede to the hometown team and cancel our event altogether?Continue Reading

Have you ever had that moment where you wished you could un-send a text?
Of course you have, you live in the 21st century and own a smart phone like any other well adjust person who isn’t stuck under a rock or an Ostridge with its head in the sand.
With all the technological advancements in the world today, you’d think that the auto correct feature on smart phones would be, well, smart or at least a bit more intuitive. We’ve all sent a text (or nine) that we didn’t proof read first before sending that may or may not have ended us up in a awkward situation. If that wasn’t true we wouldn’t have funny things to post on Facebook like the ever popular blog “Damn You Auto correct”.
Ionnis, co-founder of Fleksy, a new iOS app solves this major problem and flaw of smart type technology. Frustrated with smart phone typing errors from typing on a glass keyboard and the sub par auto corrections, Ionnis and his partner, Kostas set out to create a app to make sure that nobody ever has this problem again.
Fleksy, a product of Syntellia was based off of the following idea:
When typing with a physical keyboard you don’t spend much time looking at the keys if at all. More time is spent looking at the screen to see what you typed. Now what if you were blind? It would be impossible to type out anything  correctly. Ionnis and Kostas thought if they could create a keyboard app that a blind person could use successfully, anyone could use it. That’s the idea that set the benchmark for Fleksy.
Eighteen months ago is when they started to develop such an app. Version one was released about six weeks ago to blind people only via the iOS “voice over” function. One week ago Fleksy was released to all iOS users to try for free. Use the full version of Fleksy to text and tweet or copy and paste into emails.
Currently Fleksy is iOS only, however they are working with cell phone manufacturers to have it built into keyboards on future devices. So, sadly for now all you Android and Windows phone users will have to wait.

Very cool video segment on how SF’s tech culture is surpassing that of Silicon Valley as pegged by Deutsche Welle TV … with a glimpse of the awesome SF New Tech community and some commentary from yours truly!
CrowdFlower, a leader in crowdsourcing microtasks, has created a new way to moderate images: RTFM (Real Time Foto Moderator). While it’s not quite the normal acronym that is associated with these letters (Read The F*ing Manual) it’s still rather amusing. RTFM is a crowdsourced photo moderation service provided by CrowdFlower.
The way it works is simple:
Send in your images
1. Send CrowdFlower the URL of an image via an HTTP request to their API.
Images go out to the crowd
2. RTFM sends images to CrowdFlower’s online global labor pool of more than 3.5 million workers. Moderators use an Image Wall interface that lets them efficiently screen images at scale.
Get results back
3. RTFM sends back results via web hook with an average turnaround time under 15 minutes. Each result is calculated based on the input of multiple trusted moderators.
RTFM is the first of many crowdsourcing web apps to come from CrowdFlower, a SF-based tech company founded in 2008. Since then, CrowdFlower has moderated close to 50 million photos.
Moderating photos, especially those from big social networks or sites, takes time and lots of resources. CrowdFlower recognized an opportunity to create a more efficient way to moderate these images by leveraging the crowd, and specifically targeted small app developers, community managers and/or anyone with a user base and a photo upload feature. The result was faster, more accurate and cost effective solutions.
RTFM pricing is structured on a per-image basis, however the first 500 images are FREE! Depending on which service plan you sign up for, images cost between $0.008-$0.02 per image.
Some of CrowdFlower’s clients, use RTFM to moderate 100% of photo content on their site, while others simply use it to get through the “night shift’ when their internal moderation employees go home. Some companies use it for a “first pass” scenario: anything that gets flagged on their site goes through RTFM. Then the real employees from company “X” review problematic images and decide on a course of action. This allows companies to minimize delays for photo moderation while keeping user experience positive.
And now a word from our sponsor:
Do you use crowdsourcing? Want to learn more about it? Wonder if it can help your business?
Then CrowdConf 2012 is a must attend conference for you.
CrowdConf 2012 will held on Tuesday, October 23 at Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, CA. Tickets are now available at www.CrowdConf12.eventbrite.com

Editors Note: For being a SFNT loyalist we want to give you a 25% discount to CrowdConf 2012 by using this code: FRIENDS25
Also, if you want to get in for free, you’ll have to make an extra effort on sharing this blog post in your social networks and don’t forget to mention SFNT, CrowdFlower and of course CrowdConf. A little late in posting this as I’ve been traveling around the wilds of NY and VT for the past few weeks.
But I needed to share the news ….
First, our Big Data Summer Bash with Flurry a was completely over the top where upwards of 500 of y’all joined us to celebrate Flurry’s newest success: AppCloud! (Watch the slideshow and see!)
Flurry AppCloud empowers developers to build better apps faster while seamlessly handling cloud storage, user account management, push notifications and more.  It’s awesome.  Join the beta here.
Then, the very next day after our bash with Flurry, we announced a “mystery event” on 7.31 that promised big news from a mystery company, complete with food, drink and stellar entertainment at a cool, new venue….  and no other details. Hmmm. Who could it be??
In less than 3 hours time, after announcing the “mystery event” (via our meetup.com list and via on our ever-growing email list) it sold out! Â Boom! Â Just like that!
And then over the next six days, hundreds of people added their names to the waiting list. Trust me, I did my best responding to the deluge of inquiries from folks (you?) who really, really wanted to be there. Sorry if you got shut out but we had capacity issues, otherwise if wish EVERYONE could have been there because it rocked!
On the morning of 7.31, we revealed the secret everyone who registered and those on the waiting list…
The big reveal was the launch of Microsoft’s Outlook.com!
Hats off to you SF New Tech peeps for being the cool kids in town who Microsoft chose to usher in a brand new era of email with a kick ass party at 620 Jones headlined by The Lumineers, a band you may have heard of, Hey Ho!
Needless to say we reveled in new tech in a new way in July… and it felt good. 🙂
Last week, we were honored to see Brett Solomon, the Executive Director of Access, on the SF New Tech stage.
Brett didn’t demo anything, per se, but he did share news of how the internet is under constant threat, as well as some of the things Access is doing to help protect it.
One of the major initiatives Access recently launched is the Access Tech Innovation Awards which will provide $100,000 in prizes to individuals, organizations or networks that have the best actionable ideas of how to use information technology to promote and enable human rights or deliver a social good outcome.
Prizes are divided into five categories:
Blackout Resilience: $20,000 will go to the best actionable idea to help build an open-sourced, blackout resilient technology for use by activists and human rights workers in conditions where there is a need for alternate communications infrastructure to the one put in place and/or controlled by the authorities. For example, where there has been a communication network shutdown.                    Â
Making Crypto Easy: $20,000 will go to the best actionable idea to properly integrate encryption into an existing product/system, educate users as to how to use encryption and/or build a community who use encryption by default.                  Â
The Bounty: A $20,000 bounty will be granted for the best patch for a disclosed or as yet undisclosed vulnerability in a program/platform or software used by human rights defenders and activists.
Golden Jellybean: This is an unthemed category. $20,000 will go to the best actionable idea of how communication technologies can be used to promote and enable human rights. This could include funding a researcher for $20,000; the development of a training guide for activists; a new censorship circumvention program; or an initiative to detect surveillance equipment on the network
Access Facebook Award: $20,000 will go to the best actionable idea of how to use the Facebook platform to deliver a human rights, human development or social good outcome. We’re looking for initiatives across the spectrum – from enhancing freedom of speech and expression to improving the economic well-being of a disadvantaged group. If you are applying for the Access Facebook Award – please read this.
Applications will be evaluated based on the impact, likelihood, innovation, and sustainability of the project or idea. For more information about the awards or to apply, please visit the prize website: https://www.accessnow.org/
Feel free to share the award information with anyone you think may be interested.

Happy 4th everyone! All the videos from our June 20 event are now posted. See the great presentations from Reddit, Waze, Crowdflower, Factoid Games, iBroadcast.tv, Zero1 and more here.
Travelling by car these days can be a bit much to deal with because everyone is always on the go (traffic) and gas prices aren’t quite so friendly on your pocketbook. Waze, a very intuitive, free app for your smartphone (iOS and Android) helps you get from point A to B in several different ways.
First and foremost, Waze has always been saving you time by being a fun, community-based GPS traffic and navigation app. Currently, with its latest update (3.2), you’re now able to save money by making it easy to save on gas, and who doesn’t want that? Waze helps you find the cheapist gas around you, or along your route. It also has specials at select gas stations. Simply redeem your digital coupon when you arive at the participation station and save. All the pricing, much like everything at Waze is updated by you, the community.
Another new feature is adding a stop along your “route”. You can choose through multiple “Search by Category” features. This feature is kind of like Foursquare’s explore option that they just added, however you get realtime ETA to both your stop and final destination.
Download your free app today and start saving time and money in the coolest waze possible.
