It was great seeing everyone last night! Diddit, HearPlanet, tmeet.me, Sonar6 and Nileguide — you all rocked!
Here’s a quick recap of important links and news:
And …
We’re on a safari mission in search of sponsors to help raise the roof for The Big Summer Geek Out Party in July. We want to share the love with companies who wish to get out in front of SF’s tech scene and early adopter crowd. Our last party was nuts — all had a blast and the sponsors were thrilled. Let’s do it again. It’s turnkey. Just show up. You’ll be up to your ears in SF tech love. Promise. Also — we’re always welcoming new sponsors who wish to support the community (and their bellies) by sponsoring the famous El Toynaense Taco truck and/or pick up the bar tab. Please email "myles at sfnewtech.com" for more information.
As I mentioned from the stage (and in a previous blog post), with the launch of our Annual Membership Program, you no longer have to worry about scrambling for tickets to SF New Tech. With annual membership to SF New Tech you can just now show up and join the fun. We’ve made it simple to join, and cheap too… especially, considering how membership is your golden ticket to any of at least 12 events a year. We’ll probably offer some cool "members only" benefits in the future, too. We’re offering membership plans for individuals as well as packages for companies that want to provide easy access for staffers and colleagues … all while eliminating the hassle of those pesky post-event expense reports! Also, it’s no secret that clients and portfolio companies love being entertained at SF New Tech. With membership, you can treat them to a good time, lickety split! See the plans: www.sfnewtech.com/membership

Hope to see you there!
And finally, some really sad news…
Last week on Thursday 2/19, Brandt Cannici, SF New Tech member and demo alumni, was tragically killed in a car accident. You may remember Brandt from our 10/07 SF New Tech Rocks event when he demo’d his company Strayform, which provided services and tools to help artists get paid for their work. Brandt always had exciting things going on. His most recent endeavor was starting MedicareSaver.com, a company designed to help lower prescription drug costs for the 35 million people on Medicare. Brandt came out to our events regularly and touched me in a way few do. He inspired me greatly and he always exhibited a level of graciousness and sincerity few people can match. Although I only knew him from our tech-centric world, Brandt was kind of enough to snail-mail my wife and I a handwritten card after the birth of our daughter. He was that kind of guy. It’s with great sadness and sorrow we’re off to the races without Brandt. If you knew Brandt (or even if you didn’t) and you’re a member of Facebook, you’re invited to share your thoughts at this special Remembering Brandt Facebook group: http://bit.ly/DXQkL
RIP, Brandt. We’ll miss you.
Dear SF New Tech friends –
It’s rare form for me to send a note like this but here goes: SF New Tech is on the hunt for sponsors for 2009.
It’s safe to say SF New Tech is San Francisco’s largest and longest-running monthly technology event series and community group.
Here are the numbers:
* 4500+ members (C-level executives, VPs, developers, marketers, and more.)
* 3 years of consistent monthly events
* 35 of which have been "sold out"
* 160+ companies have taken to the stage to present live demos of their new tech
* 1800+ companies have attended through the years
That said, SF New Tech is seeking to connect with forward-thinking companies who want to build relationships with some of the Bay Area’s best early adopters.
As we make our way in to 2009, one of the best ways for companies to connect with early adopters, technology buyers, and the like, is through on-the-ground relationships. Forget big ad buys on big web sites or magazines. The real — and as far as I’m concerned, ONLY — way to really connect with present and future customers is by building experiential relationships with them. Tactile, with a smile — not a poster on the wall or a piece of glossy advertising. (If you’re not investing in building relationships with your customers because you’re nervous about the economy, you may want to reconsider. Now’s the time to get on the ground and into the community. Now’s not the time to go "dark". Unless, of course, you still want it to be dark for your business when all the dust clears.)
We’ve got a number of wonderful opportunities available. From our top-of-the-line Platinum Sponsorship package right on down to our "Drinking Buddy" Sponsorship package. Or something in between: we’re all about working with companies to help them achieve their objectives.
Here’s what Platinum Sponsor Sun Microsystems has to say:
"Our long-standing sponsorship of SF New Tech has been a great asset in our arsenal to expand awareness of and increase membership in our Sun Startup Essentials program. We have gotten great exposure and access to the SF startup community, and have established Sun’s dedication to this community. For Sun, the ROI has been very high, and we plan to continue our sponsorship well into the future!" — Joann Yates, Sun Startup Essentials
If you’d like to sponsor SF New Tech — now is the time to jump into the fray.
Or, if you’d like to earn a few dollars, consider working with us to find new sponsors and we’ll toss you upwards of 20% of net proceeds. Sometimes all it takes is a single introduction and wham-o, you’re in the money.
Please email myles@sfnewtech.com if you’re interested in learning more about our sponsorships.
Thanks and regards,
Myles Weissleder
Founder, SF New Tech.

The next SF New Tech is right around the corner – February 11th — and we’ve got some exciting news to share with you in 6.5 tasty nuggets.
1) Longer Schmooze Time!
Many folks have asked us to extend the networking portion of the night a little longer. We heard you loud and clear: the hour between 6:30 and 7:30 just wasn’t enough time to get your schmooze on. So, starting at our next event, we’ll now be opening the doors — and the bar! — an hour earlier for your networking pleasure. The demos will still start at 7:30 but if you want to slap on your name tag and get busy earlier now you can — beginning at 5:30 pm! Woohoo!
2) Free Tacos!
Many folks have asked us to provide more food. For the past year or so we’ve had hundreds sushi rolls offered up in the back room from Mikado Sushi. Needless to say it doesn’t last long. It never does. And, it’s well known fact that no matter how much food is served there’s never enough feed the hungry masses. This month we’re going to spice things up a bit. Thanks to BuzzConnect, the famous El Tonayese Taco Truck will serve up 300 FREE tacos from 5:30-7:30 pm on a first come first served basis. If you want burritos, quesadillas, or tortas, you’re free to purchase the additional grub on your own. BIG thanks to BuzzConnect for being our official munchie sponsor for our February event!
2a) BuzzConnect Shout Out!
Give ‘em a hand — and check ‘em out! BuzzConnect is the career marketplace for communications and marketing professionals worldwide. BuzzConnect helps qualified communications and marketing experts connect directly with peers, corporate decision-makers and independent recruiters. Explore Full-time, Part-time, Freelance, Contract and Consulting Opportunities at www.buzzconnect.com… />
3) February is gunna be HOT!
Lots of folks have chimed in to tell us as much as they love all this Web 2.0 stuff — there’s more to tech than Web 2.0. And we agree. This month we’re going to take a little excursion and check out Augmented Reality and QR barcode technology. How cool!
4) Ticket Tweaks
We’ve tweaked the ticket prices a bit. First mover discounts notwithstanding (see below!), the first 150 "early birds" pay $15.00. Late birds pay $20.00. Tickets at the door, day of the event, will also be $20.00 so long as the event isn’t sold out. If you show up with a pink slip we’ll let you in for $10 — but you must bring it with you!
5) February Demos!
Demos on tap for February 11th include …
Mitesh L Thakker, CEO & Founder

Ricoh’s iCandy is a free application from Ricoh Innovations that makes it easy to access and share your digital world offline. Hey everyone!
Happy 2009! Woot?
I was going to type out a diatribe about how we’re in a new year and how the possibilities are endless and the sky’s the limit and it’s a new day and don’t let the economy get you down and although there are plenty of startups who are scared shitless about what’s going on out there — there are likely more who are actually digging in harder using this downturn time to tighten the screws and to get to know their markets better; you know, soul searching and finding it … forging ahead, not getting get shut down… but I came to my senses.
I am, however, psyched to chirp about how SF New Tech is kicking off the new year in high style with some of the most killer startups around.
Mark it: January 14th @ Mighty 6:30-10pm.
Register: http://jan14sfnewtech.eventbrite.com/
No official theme this month — but productivity seems to be a shared pursuit among the presenters. We’ve got a real treat in store.
Come on down and see how to efficiently share data, manage fundraising, protect email, lay down some tasks and build a killer an event — thanks to Evernote, thegroupery, EnterTo, Manymoon and Eventbrite, respectively — and then we’ll buzz out of town with the help of the venerable David Sifry who’ll demo his new awesome startup Offbeat Guides.
Let’s band together and root these guys on. It’s going to be a good year, indeed.
Demos on tap:
Amit Kulkarni, Co-Founder & CEO
Manymoon makes it simple to track your tasks and projects online. By using Manymoon you can avoid the chaos of email and better communicate with the people you work with. http://www.manymoon.com

In other news: I was in NYC for the Web 2.0 expo and promised them I’d blog about the event. Unfortunately, I was glued to my laptop on work detail the entire time and only made it to one session — Jonah Peretti’s secrets to contagious media and social networking. The take-away: tap the "Bored at Work" network and show off your mullet (Business up front, party in the back!) to ignite your viral campaign. Since SF New Tech is all about the tech community, here are some other events you may be interested in attending, with discounts galore:
1) Startonomics. Brought to us by our friends at Dealmaker Media, and in partnership with 500-hat wearing Dave McClure, Startonomics is a full day workshop on October 2, 2008 about how to break down and leverage the metrics of success for your startup. They don’t teach you this shit at school — so you’d really be well-served to file this one under "important event not to miss". SF New Tech peeps will receive a nice discount: the first 20 members to register using the discount code "SFMU08" will receive $100 bucks off the regular ticket price. More info and registration @ http://startonomics.com
2) SanFran Music Summit. Brian Zisk has been bringing together the best-of-the-best minds in the world of music to demonstrate and discuss strides in technology in the music space. In fact, Brian helped us put together the little nugget we’re throwing on 9/4 @ Mighty (see above). If you’re interested in diving in really deep, you ought to mark October 20th down and show up @ the SanFran MusicTech Summit. SF New Techers get a 10% discount off tickets. Just use "sfnewtech" as your discount code and you’ll be golden. More info and registration: http://www.sanfranmusictech.com/
3) DEMOfall. Yep. It’s that time again, when some of the coolest new tech is unveiled for the very first time to the drooling media. For 18+ years DEMO has been the premier event for launching new products and brands to the world. If you’d like to join us in San Diego on Sept 7-9, 2008 (yep, I’ll be down there) please leverage your SF New Tech cred and effectuate your DEMO ticket discount by clicking here: http://www.demo.com/DF8PTR (There’s a similar conference going on at the same time with more expensive tickets. You’ve got a better deal with our discount code. Plus, those folks don’t reply to my emails so I’m not sure how much they really listen to new startups.)
4) Very Crunchy Chi.mp Happy Hour. OK, so let’s say you don’t have $3k to hang out with a stuffy convention center full of sweaty entrepreneurs. There’s still hope — right across the street on September 8th and 9th at the Mars Bar, the chimpsters are back in action for your networking and imbibing pleasure. $2 icy cold beers, $2 chi.mp shots; pool tourneys; giveaways; wifi and more as chi.mp continues to celebrate the evolution of the social web (see http://chi.mp). In fact, schmooze on up to a chimpster and you may get invited in to the chi.mp private beta (yes, for real), and then you’ll be 10x cooler than the folks across street. Guaranteed. RSVP @ http://verycrunchychimp-sfnt.eventbrite.com [Disclosure: I’m a chi.mp shareholder … and I was just down in Hawaii riding waves with the team. Really, it’s *that* kind of company.]
That’s it for now folks.
See you around, I hope!
Wow! Widgets up the Wazoo was AWESOME last night. It was literally standing room only and the demos were world class. Thanks to all who joined us .. and big thanks to Lawrence Coburn for his moderating prowess.

Just visit the form here. (If you didn’t give a 60 second spot but would like to post a need/want/desire you can go ahead and post it now. No worries!

5) And finally, if you want to hang with a bunch of geeks, the SF New Tech Belly Up (to the bar) happy hour is on Wednesday, August 13th @ the Mars Bar. Details @ http://augustbellyup-blog.eventbrite.com/
July is around the corner and given certain travel and vacation considerations (mine!) — I’ve flipped the free Belly Up bar schmooze to the second Wednesday in July (7/9) and moved our ticketed demo event — The 2008 Big Summer Geek Out — up to the first Wednesday of July (7/2), just before the holiday break.
Please don’t let the date flip flop confuse you!
We’re also very excited to welcome Haamonii Smooth, simply the world’s smoothest shochu, on board as a cocktail sponsor for our Big Summer Geek Out! This shochu is quite possibly the best you’ve ever tasted. And if you haven’t tasted shochu yet, you’re in for a real treat.
Big thanks to James Lim for bringing the booty — we can’t wait to raise a glass with you.

So last night was quite an adventure!
As many of you know, most of Potrero Hill was in the throes of a power outage most of yesterday afternoon.
Derek from Mighty called me while I was enroute — speeding down Van Ness — to notify me that we may have a challenge on our hands… I arrived at 4:45 and the whole neighborhood was dark.
PG&E was rumored to get the lights on in "30 minutes". So, with that intel we were all systems go… we set up in the dark and crossed our fingers. 30 minutes came and went. And then another 30 minutes. Still dark.
I twittered out our status and word about the power outage bubbled through the twitter universe like wildfire.
People started to arrive only to learn that we were in a holding pattern.
I had to make a decision to choose a time that would be the make it or break it time of whether we’d have to cancel — and I chose 7pm. If the lights weren’t on by 7pm we’d have to cancel the event that over 200 people RSVP’d for. Wonderful. A SF New Tech first.
More people arrived — and we brought the sushi outside for all to enjoy while we waited. It wasn’t looking good. T-minus 5 minutes before pulling the plug and then, boom! At 6:56 the lights came on! Yeehaw!
We scrambled to get everything in order (now that we could see!) and started to let people inside. The event started a little late but folks were happy to belly up to the bar and hang out. The demos began @ 8pm and by that time we had a VERY full house.
To keep things interesting, our famous 5 minute clock decided to fritz out for the night. It was par for the course! In all, though the event was one of our best.
I want to thank everyone for hanging in there … and I want to thank the good folks from Nirvino, Zivity, Razz, Mymeemz, and Ribbit for their most excellent demos.
Rock on SF New Tech! (Stay tuned to the Flickr box to the left for photos!)
Another great night had by all.

And, we’ll get hand’s-on with the world’s smallest computer and we’ll meet Pleo — the famous robotic dinosaur! Touch him. He loves it. Let him rub up against your leg. He’s got feelings too. It’s going to be fun!
Like I said — it’s a mix — and it’s all good.

SF New Tech evolved from its first “meetup” of eight geeks talking about tech over cold pints at the Mars Bar back in April 2006, to a cornerstone of the Bay Area technology community; serving over thousands tech industry movers and shakers, VCs, journalists, hackers, developers, recruiters from the Bay Area — and beyond.
Hundreds of companies have taken to the SF New Tech stage to demo their latest and greatest and thousands of companies have been in attendance.
Top companies have supported SF New Tech, including but not limited to Microsoft, AT&T, Motorola, eBay, Cisco, PayPal, Thumbtack, Imgur, LinkedIn, The New York Times, and many others.
SF New Tech is the Bay Area’s most-loved tech event.Â
SF New Tech was founded by, and is produced & hosted by Myles Weissleder, who’s been dancing with pixels since 1994. Myles learned a lot about bringing like-minded folks together to make a difference as one of the “founding fathers” of Meetup.com. He is proud to have been able to grow what was once just a tiny “meetup”, into what’s now a Bay Area institution.
The SF New Tech office was once anchored off the shore of Sausalito, CA and was perhaps one of the only floating offices at the center of the technology world and in the middle of the San Francisco Bay. The “SS SFNT” has since been decommissioned. It’s a long story — a true fable of the sea — and you’re encouraged to ask Myles about it when you see him.
SF New Tech operatives are available to help your organization reach influencers in the Bay Area (and beyond) via custom consulting programs. Put the power of our team to work for you.
Get in touch with us at consulting@sfnewtech.com with your needs, dreams and desires (and your budget) and we’ll propose a strategy for success!
