Here’s what Georg says how he solved an issue being new to a community and trying to find sports buddies:

“Despite there being so many social local apps around, we didn’t feel any of them really addressed one of the most fundamental problems Nat and I had:

Having recently moved from Germany to San Francisco, I was looking for an easy way to join pickup basketball games around my area and also to meet up with locals to finally learn how to surf. I was stoked to be in the Bay Area, with all that cool surfing going on. But how would I ever be able to be part of that coolness? I didn’t have any surfer friends then.

Nat, on the other hand, being an eager and starting hobby pilot, wanted to join the local aviation scene, wanted to get in touch with fellow pilots in the Bay Area.

Not only we felt this need. Friends were telling us they really wanted to get out more and be more active, but pointed out that …

– Going to the gym wasn’t really fun. It always took them a lot of self-motivation and discipline to get started. All the quantified self and motivational apps would only get them so far. The basic underlying problem really was they wanted to do something active and fun, ideally outdoors, not just lifting weights and being on the treadmill.

– The problem was, they said, they’d love to play the sports they used to play earlier in their life or in college, like tennis. But, really, it wasn’t easy for them to find partners to play. Their facebook friends were either not into tennis, or not living close enough to just spontaneously meet for a game after work.

In the age of mobile and location-aware, and having built consumer-oriented startups before, we thought there had to be a better way and started prototyping SPOTS.”
